Extra insurance or Excess Insurance

You are required to have a current and valid driving license and a credit card. A passport or national identity card is usually also required for identification purposes. You (and any additional driver) are required to sign the agreement in person. Any questions you have about fuel, mileage, tolls, crossing over into Northern Ireland, early morning car returns etc., should all be asked at this point with the representative from the company.

Drivers must have held a valid driver’s license for more than a year. Provisional or learner drivers, or those with serious offences on their licenses will not be permitted to rent cars. Drivers from the UK, the USA and Canada are not required to have an international driving license.

All companies impose age restrictions on drivers. These are usually in form of Young Driver or Older driver penalties, or restricting what classes of vehicle you are allowed to drive.

The standard age requirement for carhire is 25. Anyone under 25 (typically between the ages of 21-24) is considered a young driver. These young drivers are required to pay an extra fee per day for the duration of their agreement. This fee is usually between €20/30 per day depending on the provider.

The maximum age in Ireland depends on the company that you are renting from. Most companies have a cut off limit of either 69, 70 or 75, while others say that as long as you hold a current and valid driver’s license you will be allowed to drive. Older drivers are usually subject to a per day fee of €20/30 for the increased insurance risk, according to the suppliers.

Yes and no! Yes, you can get around Ireland without a car, there are tour companies and buses which do the main tourist routes and attractions, or organize day trips which you could go on.

However, Ireland is rural and the beauty of Ireland comes from the rugged and isolated parts of our landscape and country side.

These cannot be fully explored if you are tied to the schedule of a planned tour. For example, if you are looking at exploring the west coast of Ireland or seeing some of the Wild Atlantic Way, then I would absolutely recommend driving. You have a freedom and flexibility which no tour can give you. You can stop and see the most spectacular scenery and take pictures. You can go slowly through an area that particularly appeals you to, and skip places that are not high up on your wish list. I would always recommend seeing Ireland by car.
