Naples is the capital of Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy, and reportedly the home of Pizza or at least of modern pizza as we know it. And any gourmand worth their salt will know that Naples is also famous for coffee, mozzarella cheese and its pasticceria (pastry shops). And there is a lot more to Naples than food; with its old town center, winding, narrow streets, museums, Roman history, lively night life and all of this is set along the coast. And from Naples, you can jump into your rental car and set off for the delights of Capri, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, which will give you beach time, fabulous weather, food, wines and a taste of la dolce vita.

The top thing to do in Naples is to eat pizza but make sure you choose somewhere cheap with a queue that says ‘vera pizza napoletana’ (real Neapolitan pizza). Don’t worry about the queue, you will be served quickly and it will be worth it! Take a rambling stroll around the historic city center with a map. Visit the National Archaeological Museum, the Veiled Christ at Capella Sansevero, tour the Naples underground and to step out of the old world back into the present, go to the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina. Stroll along the promenade at the coast, and for party fans, summer in Naples means the sound of the sea and top DJs in clubs along the coast.
After seeing the museums, experience the real thing with a trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius. Capri with its azure sky, lemon groves and glistening ocean is a perfect day trip (or longer) from Naples but it attracts thousands of day trippers each day, so get up early or else plan to stay a little longer to enjoy it fully. Sorrento is where Odysseus was enchanted by mermaids and is the mythical land of sirens, maintaining it natural beauty, it is quieter than Capri and a lovely break from the chaos of Naples. To get to Amalfi, you take your rental car along the one of the most beautiful and dramatic stretches of coastline in the world. The coast road drive is slow with traffic but just enjoy the view – it’s amazing.
