Ben Gurion International Airport is the main airport servicing Tel Aviv and Israel. It is referred to locally by its Hebrew acronym NatBag. It is one of two airports in the Tel Aviv area, the other being Sde Dov Airport, which mainly carries domestic flights. Ben Gurion airport is 19kms from the centre of Tel Aviv. It has been voted ‘Best Middle Eastern Airport’ and it is considered one of the safest airports in the world. When you are coming or going through the airport, remember that you are in an area of high alert and so security is very tight with uniformed and plain clothed security officers. It might seem excessive, but it is necessary and safety is paramount.

Getting there & Away

You can travel by bus, train, rental car or taxi from Ben Gurion Airport. Buses depart across from Gates 21 and 23 on the 2nd floor in Terminal 3 and go to Airport City; transfer here to a regular bus line. Other operators run buses to Shoham or Be’er Sheva through Gedera and Kiryat Gat. The train station is located on level S (bottom floor) and tickets can be bought on the Level G automatic machines and go from Ben Gurion to Tel Aviv, Haifa, Acre, Nahariya and back. Taxi stands are found on level G in Terminal 3. Always use the taxi dispatchers as it is more secure and ensure that your taxi driver uses the meter and always ask for a receipt at the end of your journey.

Tel Aviv is a city of year round sun, 16kms of sea frontage, fabulous restaurants and cafes and also a city of commerce and contemporary architecture, art and style. Don’t leave Tel Aviv without soaking up sun, going to beach, theme parks and eating hummus (it’s a way of life here!) and don’t miss Rothschild Boulevard which is the prettiest street in the city and part of the ‘White City’ which the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the world. Being a small country, Israel is an ideal place to explore by rental car, Haifa and Jerusalem (1 hour), the Dead Sea (2 hours) or else from Haifa visit the Sea of Galilee and The Golan Heights. Or in the south, you have the Dead Sea, Be’er Sheva and Ein Geddi.
