What is car hire excess insurance?

Car hire excess insurance is an optional insurance policy that you can buy with your car rental to protect you from the excess costs you would otherwise be required to pay in the event of damage to, or theft of your vehicle.

To help explain it a little more simply, we will take a step back, and explain what an excess is.

When you book a hire car you usually have a level of Collision Damage Waiver coverage, but if you have to make a claim, then you would be required to pay the first part of any claim yourself. This is known as the excess (or sometimes referred to as a deduction).

Car hire excess insurance is a policy that you can purchase with your rental car booking or you can buy it separately with an independent insurance company. This is an insurance policy to cover the excess amount on your booking in the event that you have an accident. It gives you peace of mind that you will not be out of pocket in the event of something going wrong.

The excess is the amount of money that you would you be required to pay in the event of damage to, or theft of your vehicle. This information is available by clicking on the important information button at each stage of the booking process on Car Booker. You should always read this information before you book your hire car. In the example here, you can see that there is an excess of €900 for any damage to your car, or an excess of €900 in the event of vehicle theft.
