Frank Gehry’s Museo Guggenheim is a must see inside and out. In Casco Viejo (old town) you will find the Plaza Nueva teeming with cafes, bars and shops and a great place browse, enjoy a coffee or stroll around. Check out the Palacio de la Diputacion, the Siete Calles (seven original streets) and the Museo de Bellas Artes or the Museo de Reproducciones Artisticas for full scale reproductions of really famous art. Go to the Plaza Moyua and Gran Via for highstreet shopping in Zara, H&M and Mango and don’t leave Bilbao without trying the Basque version of tapas known as pintxos. A great local Sunday activity at lunch time is a bar crawl eating pintxos and drinking a local wine or rose.
An hour east of Bilbao is San Sebastian with the beautiful Playa del la Concha beach which has a promenade and lots of cafes. About an hour north west is Santander with the Palace of La Magdalena, the Cathedral of Asuncion de la Virgen, the San Felipe castle, the convent of Santa Cruz, or the Marcelino Botin Foundation. Or go south to Salamanca; full of narrow and winding streets, all the main sights are in the ‘monument zone’ between the main plaza (Plaza Mayor) and the river.
